Japan endures hottest summer on record
Tokyo (AFP) Sept 1, 2010
Japan has endured its hottest summer since records began in 1898, the meteorological agency said Wednesday, during a heatwave that saw thousands of people taken to hospital suffering heatstroke.
The average temperature nationwide between June and August was 1.64 degrees Celsius above average for the period, forecasters said.
The previous record margin was 1.36 degrees C set in 1994.

NASA sends experts to help Chile miners

A team of NASA doctors and scientists will travel to Chile this week to lend its expertise to efforts to keep 33 trapped miners fit and healthy, the US space agency said Monday.
The Chilean government had asked NASA to provide technical advice that might assist the trapped miners at the San Jose gold and copper mine near the town of Copiapo.

Cholera outbreak hits eastern China

At least 30 people in eastern China have been stricken by cholera in recent weeks, with unsanitary food conditions believed to be behind the outbreak, state press said Sunday.
Twenty people remain hospitalised with the disease, which has spread in Mengcheng county of Anhui province over the past two weeks, the Beijing Times reported, citing local health officials.
