Surveillance capabilities at nine Australian civil/military airfields are to be enhanced by sensor systems from Airbus Defense and Space.

The airport surveillance radars are being acquired by Australia's new Capability, Acquisition and Sustainment Group through two contracts with a combined value of more than $203 million.

The sensors are part of project "AIR 5431 Phase 2 – Fixed Defense Air Traffic Control Surveillance Sensors," which is to provide radar for enhanced input into the Australian National Air Traffic Management Surveillance picture and contribute to the achievement of Air Battle Management missions.

The Airport Surveillance Radar - Next Generation radar to be supplied will not only aid in the takeoff and landing of aircraft but also individual identification of more than 2,000 transponder-equipped aircraft at a time and expansion of detection range.

Deliveries of 10 radar systems – one is for training purposes – will be completed at the end of 2020, the company said.

Airbus DS' ASR-NG has also been ordered by both the Canadian and British Air Forces.
