Avio Aero, an Italian component and maintenance firm, has been tapped for long-term logistics support for engines on Brazil's AMX fighters.

The contract to support Rolls-Royce Spey Mk807 engines is for five years, the company said, but no information on the value of the award was disclosed.

"This contract strengthens Avio Aero's role as a strategic partner of the Brazilian Air Force and its presence in Brazil," said Riccardo Procacci, chief executive officer of Avio Aero. "The MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) contract, together with component, repair and overhaul services, are one of the pillars of Avio Aero's strategy which, with more than 40-year experience in these activities, confirms its commitment as a propulsion technology partner for the aviation Industry."

The AMX is a ground attack aircraft produced by AMX International, an Italian-Brazilian joint venture. It was first introduced into service in 1989 and is flown by the air forces of both countries.

The single-seat fighter has a maximum speed of 568 miles per hour and a combat radius of 553 miles.
