China and U.K. 'stand united' on energy security, minister says

The Chinese and British governments stand together in developing lasting energy solutions to tackle climate change, the British energy secretary said.

Government leaders from both sides met in London to introduce joint measures aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing energy security

"China and the U.K. stand united in our plans for more collaborative working that will help to achieve long lasting energy security in our own countries," British Energy Secretary Ed Davey said in a statement Tuesday.

Part of the deal extends to nuclear energy cooperation. Chinese companies under the terms of the agreement can own and operate nuclear power plants of Chinese design provided they meet British regulatory requirements.

China is one of the world leaders in terms of energy consumption and emissions. The British government said its emissions for the four quarters to fourth quarter 2013 were 2 percent lower year-on-year.

The British government in May reviewed with the Japanese government ways to advance a low-carbon economy, adding nuclear power was a key component of a greener future.
