Iraq forces ready attack on jihadist-held Baiji
Kirkuk, Iraq (AFP) Oct 29, 2014 - Hundreds of Iraqi soldiers and pro-government fighters are gathering for an assault on the strategic jihadist-held northern town of Baiji, officers said on Wednesday.

"Iraqi forces are massing at the town of Baiji, preparing to enter the town and regain control of it," said Lieutenant General Abdulwahab al-Saadi, who heads the provincial military command.

Baiji, which was overrun during a sweeping offensive spearheaded by the Islamic State group in June, has been out of government control for months.

It lies on the main highway to IS-controlled second city Mosul and its recapture would help to further isolate jihadist forces in the city of Tikrit, further south.

The assault could also open the way to breaking a months-old jihadist siege of government forces defending Iraq's largest oil refinery, which is located near Baiji.

But even with US-led air support, government forces face a major challenge in retaking the town, and previous offensives have failed to gain ground.

An army brigadier general said that the government forces, which are now about 1.5 kilometres (one mile) from Baiji, are made up of soldiers, militiamen and armed tribesmen.

But special forces will lead the push into the city, which the officer said has been used as a centre for moving supplies brought in from Syria to other parts of Iraq.

IS holds territory on both sides of the Iraq-Syria border, and has declared an Islamic "caliphate" encompassing parts of both countries.

Jihadists from the Islamic State group have executed at least 46 members of a tribe that fought against them in Iraq's Anbar province, sources said.

The men from the Albu Nimr tribe were killed in an area overrun by the militants last week north of the town of Heet, a local leader and a doctor said.

A police colonel and a leader from the anti-jihadist Sahwa forces confirmed the killings, saying they took place on Wednesday.

IS jihadists have overrun large areas of Anbar, and the killings are likely aimed at discouraging resistance from powerful local tribes, who will be key to any successful bid to retake the province.

Images said to show the aftermath of the public executions were circulated on micro-blogging site Twitter, but their authenticity could not be independently confirmed.

One picture shows a long line of more than 30 men in civilian clothes lying in the middle of a street with streams of blood running over the dusty ground, as young men and children look on.

The victims are barefoot and many are blindfolded, their hands bound behind their backs.

IS did not immediately claim responsibility for the killings, but the group has executed hundreds of people in areas of Iraq and Syria that it controls.

IS spearheaded a militant offensive that has overrun much of the country's Sunni Arab heartland since June, sweeping security forces aside.

Iraqi security forces, Shiite militias and some Sunni tribesmen are fighting to push IS back, but have made only limited local progress so far.
