Mexico announces seizure of arms stockpile smuggled from US

Mexico City, Aug 31, 2026 (AFP) AFP

Mexican authorities seized 210 firearms that were smuggled into the country from Texas by criminal groups, Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch said Monday.

The Mexican government has repeatedly demanded that the United States clamp down on the illegal flow of weapons across the border, saying the arms are fuelling the country's drug war.

The weapons -- 195 rifles, 15 handguns and 93 magazines -- were found stashed in two trucks travelling on a highway in the northern state of Nuevo Leon, on the US border, Garcia Harfuch wrote on X.

Three people were arrested in the operation to "dismantle the routes used to illegally smuggle weapons into our country," he said.

He added that the seizure brought to over 30,000 the number of firearms seized since left-wing President Claudia Sheinbaum took office in October 2024.

Mexico has repeatedly rebuffed criticism from US President Donald Trump of Sheinbaum's record in fighting her country's powerful drug cartels.
