The orbit of the International Space Station was raised to ensure the safe docking of a Russian spacecraft next year, Russian officials said.

The altitude of the ISS was raised Friday by about 1.4 miles to 259.5 miles, RIA Novosti reported.

The adjustment was made to ensure that the Russian space freighter Progress M-22M can safely dock at the ISS after it is launched into space on Feb. 5.
