Motorola unveils new smartphone in London
London (AFP) Sept 18, 2012 - Motorola Mobility unveiled Tuesday its new Intel-powered RAZR i mobile phone, which it hopes will compete against Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S III in the competitive smartphone market.

Motorola, which was purchased by Internet giant Google for $12.5 billion last year, announced its latest smartphone at a press conference in central London.

The RAZR i, which is the first Motorola phone to feature an Intel processor, can achieve speeds of 2.0 gigahertz, according to the group.

The phone was introduced almost one week after tech giant Apple launched its new iPhone 5, which is a lighter, thinner and more powerful version of its iconic mobile device.

The new Motorola smartphone, which has a 4.3-inch edge-to-edge touchscreen and uses Google's Android software, will go on sale in Europe and Latin America in October.

"It's our biggest launch since the original RAZR," said Andrew Morley, Motorola Mobility's general manager for UK and Ireland.

"We are launching the product on selective markets in October: France, UK, Germany, Mexico, Brazil (and) Argentina," he told reporters.

Motorola added that the battery of its new smartphone would last for 20 hours.

"The battery is 40 percent more powerful than the iPhone 4S," said Jim Wicks, head of design at Motorola Mobility.

Apple's hotly-anticipated iPhone 5 won more than two million orders in just 24 hours, following its launch last Wednesday.

On Tuesday, meanwhile, South Korea's LG Electronics launched its new flagship smartphone called Optimus G.

Apple shares closed above $700 for the first time on Wall Street Tuesday, amid optimism about the tech giant as it launches its new iPhone 5.

Apple closed up 0.3 percent at a record $701.93, a day after the Silicon Valley firm said it received more than two million orders for its new iPhone 5 in just 24 hours.

The company's market value based on its stock price has surged above $657 billion, extending Apple's lead as the world's most valuable corporation.

Apple unveiled the new version of its iconic smartphone last Wednesday and opened up pre-orders on Friday. The company said the hot item would be available in 100 countries around the world by year's end.

Shaw Wu, analyst at Sterne Agee, has set an Apple price target of $840.

"We continue to believe many underestimate iPhone 5 in that it is a significant update and will drive a powerful product cycle," Wu said in a note to clients, adding that the only thing holding Apple back may be "supply constraints."

Scott Craig, analyst at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, said Apple is entering an "iPhone super cycle" and raised his price target to $850 for the stock.

"Our upward estimate revision is driven, in part, by a faster than expected global rollout of the iPhone 5," he said in a research note.

"We expect the iPhone 5 sale... to exceed the four million unit record set by the iPhone 4S in the first weekend."

Some analysts say Apple could sell 10 million iPhones in the opening days and 50 million before the end of 2012.

Fox launches streaming films with iTunes, Google

The company said more than 600 Fox films will be made available to US customers from Amazon,CinemaNow, Google Play,iTunes, PlayStation, Vudu, XboxLive and YouTube.

"With almost 800 million broadband connected devices globally, and millions of people accessing entertainment on those devices, we feel the medium's time has come," said Mike Dunn, president worldwide of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Readers Digest in new push in print, digital
New York (AFP) Sept 18, 2012 - US publishing giant Reader's Digest is expanding -- both in print and digital.

The company which emerged from bankruptcy in 2010 said last week it will increase the frequency of its US flagship Reader's Digest Magazine to 12 editions per year from 10, for both print and tablet.

In a statement last week, Reader's Digest said it is on pace for 200,000 digital subscribers by the end of the year, along with 5.5 million print subscribers.

"In the past, print economics have driven many of the decisions made in the publishing industry. As digital becomes a driving force for our business, the economics are changing as well,"said Robert Guth, president and chief executive of The Reader's Digest Association.

"Our digital issues are garnering unprecedented demand and readers have been vocal about their desire for new content on a more frequent basis."

Reader's Digest said it has led its category in print advertising growth, up nearly 30 percent over the last two years. It said it is the only publication in the category to show an increase in pages in 2012, up 11 percent.

"We are excited to provide our advertisers more opportunities for successfully reaching their target audiences through both print and digital channels," said Mark Josephson, chief sales officer.

"We believe our status as one of the very few publications in the industry to increase both advertising and issue frequency in recent years is due in large part to our commitment to navigating a changing media environment through innovative content and digital strategies."

Reader's Digest in 2009 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and emerged after restructuring several months later.
