WEATHER REPORT
At least 14 dead in Argentina storms
by Staff Writers
Buenos Aires (AFP) April 5, 2012

At least 14 people died overnight into Thursday in Argentina following storms that saw strong winds cause damage across the capital region.

"Seven people died -- six were crushed and one was electrocuted," near Buenos Aires, local emergency coordinator Luciano Timerman told reporters.

Police also said three other people died in a neighborhood to the south of Buenos Aires when an illegally built home collapsed.

In the capital, a man died when the walls of his home collapsed, authorities also said in an initial report.

They later reported the death of another man crushed by the wall of a gas station abandoned in Florencio Varela to the south of Buenos Aires. A woman was killed after another wall fell on her.

In central-eastern Santa Fe province, a high tension cable snapped by the high winds killed a man, Timerman said.

Strong winds blew down four ramps of spotlights at the Nueva Chicago football club in the capital, while the San Lorenzo and Huracan clubs also suffered heavy damage, their directors said.

The sheet metal roofs of many homes were blown away, while the winds broke building windows, in addition to other damage reported by witnesses and local media.

The Buenos Aires parks and recreation chief said 114 trees had collapsed, destroying many vehicles and blocking roads, while parts of the capital and the suburbs were in the dark after the power was cut.

Once neighborhood residents in the center of the capital told AFP they saw high rise buildings move during the powerful gusts.

Thousands without power in Buenos Aires after storm
Buenos Aires (AFP) April 8, 2012 - Thousands of people were still in the dark Sunday days after a major storm killed 17 people and knocked out electric service in many areas of Buenos Aires, authorities said.

The storm hit late Wednesday and flooded many neighborhoods in outlying areas of the capital city, toppling power lines and trees and damaging buildings.

"In many cases, the power distribution network has to be rebuilt from scratch," said Eduardo Mirabelli, spokesman for the private power company Edenor which supplies 2.3 million clients.

In one hard hit town alone, Ituzaingo, just west of the capital, at least 4,000 power lines were blasted off their footing and power lines were downed mostly under trees, Mirabelli said.

"The damage really has outstripped our response capacity," he said, adding that the company had 45 trucks out repairing the network.

More than 50,000 people in Merlo had no power or drinking water on Sunday due to the storm, local official Lucas Ghi said.

Buenos Aires provincial governor Daniel Scioli said the wind, rain and hailstorm had been devastating for his district.

President Cristina Kirchner also ordered army troops to help with cleanup and recovery efforts.

Washington (AFP) April 3, 2012
At least two tornadoes ripped across northern Texas Tuesday, flipping huge trucks like toys, tearing off roofs and grounding flights but apparently causing only minor casualties. One twister touched down in a parking lot full of tractor-trailers - large trucks that move shipping-container sized cargos - and television images showed several large vehicles twisting and flying dozens of feet ... read more
