Battelle, Halyard teaming on Navy medical project

Columbus, Ohio (UPI) Jun 9, 2016

These are some early images of what ACCSIL bandaging may look like. Battelle and Halyard Health are developing the wound care treatment for the Office of Naval Research.

Battelle and Halyard Health are teaming up on a $14.4 million U.S. Navy project aimed at saving more tissue after battlefield injuries, Battelle announced Thursday.

The Office of Naval Research project aims to give military medics in the field something better with which to initially treat severely injured limbs, the company said.

The Acute Care Cover for Severely Injured Limbs, or ACCSIL, initiative, includes the development of a cover that protects an injured limb while providing a therapeutic cocktail that mitigates the trauma and aids tissue survival.

The cover will be carried by Navy corpsmen and medics outside the wire and will maintain tissue condition for up to 72 hours, Batelle said.

Known as the Protective Oxygenating Wrap for Enhance Recovery, or POWER, it will feature essential medical ingredients, enhanced wound dressing materials and the healing power of oxygen in a small, lightweight package that will be used in conjunction with a tourniquet.

Battelle said the product will also be useful for first responders and other parts of the civilian sector.

The project will reach the prototype stage by late 2017, Battelle said.

Battelle is an applied science and technology company, while Halyard Health provide medical technology solutions for preventing infection, among other missions.

Aboard The USS Harry S. Truman (AFP) June 9, 2016
Waffles and pancakes are being doused with maple syrup. A baseball game burbles unwatched from the flatscreen television on the wall. Wardroom 3 on the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier could be anywhere in Middle America. But this is no ordinary diner. A few hours from now, some of the pilot officers dampening their luxuriant moustaches in big mugs of coffee will be flying over Syria in ... read more
