China has announced its intention to expand the participation of foreign astronauts and space tourists in missions to its space station, emphasizing inclusivity and cooperation in its space endeavors. According to Lin Xiqiang, spokesman for the Shenzhou XVIII mission, this initiative aims to diversify the backgrounds of those participating in upcoming space station flights.

Three groups of astronauts have already been trained under this program, with the selection of a fourth group nearing completion. These astronauts will contribute to ongoing missions and are expected to participate in China's future lunar landing efforts. "Our astronaut team exhibits a wide range of ages and professional skills, maintaining a focus on their spaceflight objectives while excelling in mental, physical, and professional capacities," Lin stated during a press briefing at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

Additionally, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) has welcomed new international partners to the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) project, including Nicaragua, the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization, and the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences. These partnerships, announced during the Space Day of China event in Wuhan, Hubei province, will support various aspects of the ILRS, such as project planning, construction, and operational management.

The ILRS is designed to be an autonomous research facility with capabilities for short-term human stays, with its initial phase expected to be operational by 2030. The announcement coincides with the commemoration of Space Day in China, which marks the anniversary of the launch of China's first satellite, Dongfanghong-1, on April 24, 1970.

Tokyo (AFP) April 24, 2024
Japan's Moon lander woke up for a third time after its main functions survived another frigid two-week lunar night, the country's space agency said Wednesday. But the unmanned lightweight spacecraft, carrying a mini-rover that moves like a turtle, landed at a wonky angle that left its solar panels facing ... read more
