Congo, China, sign 975m-euro deal to rebuild Brazzaville
by Staff Writers
Brazzaville (AFP) Sept 4, 2012

Congo and China on Tuesday signed accords worth 975 million euros as part of a project to rebuild parts of the capital Brazzaville devastated by a deadly munitions depot blast in early March.

The 975-million-euro ($1.225-billion) deals were sealed on the second day of a three-day visit by China's Vice Premier Hui Liangyu. Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso signed for his country, an official statement said.

Most of the money will go to rebuilding after the March 4 explosions at a munitions depot in the Mpila quarter in the east of the capital, which killed nearly 300 people, injured more than 2,300 and left 17,000 homeless.

Hui Liangyu visited the devastated zone during his visit.

"Decontamination operations in the disaster zone are at an advanced stage," Colonel Jean Bamanika, who is overseeing the work, told AFP.

"The epicentre has been 80-percent decontaminated," he added.

Some of the money -- around 54 million euros -- will also go towards developing the country's telecommunications network; another 60 million euros has been earmarked for building a road in the north of the country.

Congo also opend a centre dedicated to demonstrating agricultural techniques on Tuesday. This too was financed by China to the tune of 4.2 million euros.
