Corning to debut tougher Gorilla Glass

Corning Glass says it will introduce a stronger and thinner version of its Gorilla Glass for smartphone and tablet displays in Las Vegas next week.

Preparing for the Consumer Electronics Show debut of its new product, Corning says it has improved Gorilla Glass 3 on a molecular level with improvements the company has dubbed Native Damage Resistance, Slash Gear reported Thursday.

By studying atomic structure and bonding properties, Corning was able to "invent another kind of glass" that makes the substance less brittle and less prone to scratches, David Velasquez, Gorilla Glass' director of marketing and commercial operations, told CNET.

Gorilla Glass 3 will be three times stronger than Gorilla Glass 2 and 40 percent more scratch-resistant, yet thinner, Corning said.

The thinner glass should make for sharper displays that are easier to read, although consumers may have to wait some time before getting a look at the new product; Corning said it will not have any Gorilla Glass 3-equipped devices at CES and it will be awhile before any smartphones or tablets hit the market for customers to sample.

"You'll start to see new product announcements within a couple months after CES," Velasquez said.
