Egypt military regime urges end to strikes, protests

Clinton sees 'reassuring' moves by Egypt military
Washington (AFP) Feb 14, 2011 - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Monday that Egypt's military has so far taken "reassuring" steps towards democratic reforms but warned much work remains and offered US help. "This is a very challenging moment for the Egyptian military," Clinton told reporters during a visit to the US Congress. "The steps they've taken so far are reassuring, but there's a long way to go, and the United States has made it clear that we stand ready to assist in any way appropriate," she said.

Clinton cited longstanding military-to-military ties between Washington and Cairo, mentioned by experts as a key factor in the Egyptian army's handling of unprecedented protests that ended former president Hosni Mubarak's three decades in power. "I think the Egyptian military demonstrated its very strong commitment to the people of Egypt in its restraint and its support of their right to demonstrate," said the top US diplomat. "They are now being asked to assume a responsibility that wasn't in the guidebook for young officers -- how to lead a country through an orderly, peaceful meaningful transition to a democratic future," she said. "Thus far they've demonstrated a seriousness of purpose and a commitment to pursuing the kind of transition that we hope will lead to free/fair elections" and to broad democratic reforms and an inclusive government, said Clinton. "We're going to continue working, not just with the military, with civil society with a broad range of representatives from across Egypt's full breadth and depth," she said.

Eurozone's Juncker backs Mubarak asset freeze
Brussels (AFP) Feb 14, 2011 - The head of the 17-nation Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker, said on Monday he backs a European Union freeze on assets held abroad by ousted Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak. Asked if he would take similar moves to freeze Mubarak assets as Switzerland did on Friday, Luxembourg Prime Minister Juncker gave a categorical "yes." Diplomats told AFP at the weekend that broad agreement was already in place among the 27 EU nations that, should Egypt take action to recover Mubarak wealth, and Brussels be invited to follow suit, the EU would implement the freeze. "We are in contact with the Egyptian authorities. We will take appropriate measures if this issue comes up, when necesssary," Maja Kocijancic, spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, also said Monday.

Cairo (AFP) Feb 14, 2011
Egypt's new military regime on Monday called on workers to end a wave of strikes and civil disobedience that has threatened to paralyse the country in the wake of the fall of Hosni Mubarak's government.

In its latest announcement since it took power Friday, the Supreme Council of the Armed forces urged labour leaders to call off their action, but stopped short of issuing a decree banning them, as it had been rumoured it would do.

"Some government institutions have staged protests despite life returning to normal at a time when all citizens should stand together," a spokesman said on state television, as doctors and policemen marched in Cairo.

"Honourable citizens can see that protests at this critical time will have a negative effect in harming the security of the country," he said, arguing that strikes harm the state's ability to provide for citizens and hurt the economy.

US military chief reassures Israel after Egypt revolt
Jerusalem (AFP) Feb 14, 2011 - The top US military commander reassured Israeli leaders on Monday that military ties between the allies remain as strong as ever in the face of the changes sweeping the Middle East.

US Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Admiral Mike Mullen was dispatched to Israel and Jordan to reassure them the fall of veteran Western ally Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak after 18 days of mass protests would not affect the US alliance system in the region.

"The connection and the relationship with the Israeli Defence Forces goes back decades," Mullen said ahead of a meeting with President Shimon Peres.

"The strength of this relationship is something that we both depend on, and it's particularly relevant in these very difficult times," Mullen said, alluding to the events in Egypt and Tunisia.

Israel has been fearful that the events unfolding in Egypt could lead to the unravelling of the 1979 peace treaty between the two countries, a cornerstone of Israel's defence policy.

And Israel was critical of the United States for supporting the pro-democracy protests, saying that Mubarak had been instrumental in preserving the treaty and stability in the region.

Israel's fears were eased slightly when Mubarak handed power to the military, which said in a statement on Saturday that Cairo would continue to respect all its treaties, including with the Jewish state.

But Israel still fears that a hostile Islamic regime could emerge from the turmoil.

The United States, which helped broker the peace deal is the main guarantor of the pact, giving both countries billions in aid, much of it military.

Peres reiterated how important US support was for Israel.

"For us, the US is the best friend we have and we are full of respect for the American military and see it as one of the most important institutions. The greatness of the US is that you draw strength from giving and not from taking," he said.

During his visit, Mullen met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak, their offices said without giving details of the talks.

He also attended a ceremony in which Lieutenant General Benny Gantz took over as armed forces chief of staff.

Before arriving in Israel, Mullen met Jordan's King Abdullah II and chief of staff Lieutenant General Meshaal al-Zabn.
