Facebook unveils new search ad plan
San Francisco (AFP) Aug 23, 2012 - Facebook has unveiled a new feature which delivers ads to users based on their search queries, taking a page from a strategy used effectively by Google and others.

"We have launched a feature that surfaces sponsored results along with the organic results when people are looking for things on Facebook," a Facebook spokeswoman said.

"We try to show people apps and pages they'll be most interested in."

The world's biggest social network gets most of its revenues from ads, but until now has not directly linked those ads to search queries in the manner of the big search engines like Google and Yahoo.

The move comes with Facebook seeking to reassure investors it can boost revenues after a disastrous public offering in May, after which its share price fell by more than half.

Facebook unveiled a new mobile app Thursday for its users on Apple iPhone and iPad, saying it would speed up the performance of people accessing the world's biggest social network.

The new app is "a major update to the Facebook for iOS rebuilt from the ground up, to focus on one thing, performance," said Facebook product manager Mick Johnson.

Johnson told AFP that those using the app on Apple devices would be able to perform many functions "twice as fast" including opening the application, scrolling through their newsfeed and opening a photo.

"We kept the visual layout pretty much the same," he said. "The focus of this was performance."

Facebook made other improvements to help make its app more user-friendly, Johnson said.

"We saw many people using Facebook for iPhone one-handed," he said, so the developers made it easier to do certain things such as opening or closing a photo by swiping the screen with one's thumb.

The new version of the app for iPad will also allow users to create a "timeline" which can be done on Facebook in other versions.

The Facebook 5.0 app will be compatible with versions 4.3 and newer of the Apple mobile operating system.

Facebook has some 500 million mobile users, but the company does not break down statistics for those using specific operating systems.

US clears Facebook deal for Instagram
Washington (AFP) Aug 22, 2012 - US regulators said Wednesday they closed an investigation into Facebook's billion-dollar deal to buy the startup behind photo-sharing smartphone application Instagram, taking no action.

The Federal Trade Commission said in a statement that Facebook's bid to buy Instagram "may now proceed as proposed."

In letters to both firms published on the FTC's website, the agency said for the first time that it had opened a probe into potential violations of federal laws on competition or deceptive practices.

But the letters said "no further action is warranted at this time."

"This action is not to be construed as a determination that a violation may not have occurred, just as the pendency of an investigation should not be construed as a determination that a violation has occurred," each of the letters said.

"The commission reserves the right to take such further action as the public interest may require."

The big ticket purchase was seen by some as a move by Facebook to strengthen defenses against Google and blazing hot newcomer Pinterest just ahead of the Facebook public offering.

"For years, we've focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family," Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said in announcing the deal in April.

"Now, we'll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests."

Zuckerberg called the purchase "an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users," but promised it was a rare acquisition.
