First GMLRS warhead rolls off production line
by Geoff Ziezulewicz
Dallas (UPI) Sep 13, 2016

A Lockheed Martin GMLRS Alternative Warhead detonates at the target during a test flight at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico

The first Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System, or GMLRS, Alternative Warhead rocket has rolled off Lockheed Martin's production line in Camden, Ark., the company reported Tuesday.

The warhead was designed to engage the same target set and achieve the same area-effects requirement as the old MLRS submunition warhead but without the lingering danger of unexploded ordnance, Lockheed said in a statement.

The new warhead rocket also allows MLRS users to have an area-effects weapon in their inventories without the need to procure additional launcher systems.

The rocket is an all-weather, time-critical, rapidly deployable guided munition, and represents what the company said is a consistent evolution of the weapon.

The rocket is fully compliant with international treaties banning submunition weapons.

Lockheed received a U.S. Army initial production contract for the warheads in June 2015.

Each warhead will be packaged in a MLRS launch pod and fired from the HIMARS or M270 family of launchers.
