Oshkosh to showcase JLTV at Eurosatory
Oshkosh, Wis. (UPI) Jun 13, 2016 - Oshkosh Defense will showcase its next-generation Joint Light Tactival Vehicle this week at the Eurosatory defense expo in Paris, the company announced.

The vehicle is set to replace the U.S. Army and Marine Corps' High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or Humvee, offering faster speed, greater protection and better off-road mobility, the company said.

It brings a smoother ride with all the protection provided by the Mine Resistant Ambushed Protected, or MRAP, vehicles.

It is based on Oshkosh's Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle and features a powerful drive train and TAK-4i suspension that enables troops to travel off-road at speeds 70 percent faster than today's gold standard, Oshkosh said.

The TAK-4i can be raised and lowered via interior operator controls that better foster transportation over air, sea and land.

It can be moved by everything from C-130, C-5 and C-17 aircraft to Chinook helicopters, the company said.

The JLTV's coming-out party at Eurosatory follows an exhibition in Jordan last month at the Special Operations Forces Exhibition.

The U.S. Army placed its initial order for 657 of the vehicles, 2,977 installed kits and related support earlier this year in a contract valued at more than $243 million.

Oshkosh was awarded a $6.75 billion contract to build nearly 17,000 of the vehicles in August. Lockheed Martin, which also bid on the contract, initially protested the awarding of the contract to Oshkosh, but withdrew its protest in February.

General Dynamics European Land Systems will show off its new Piranha 3+ and Duro 4X4 vehicles at the Eurosatory defense expo this week, the company announced.

The Piranha 3+ will be presented in a wheeled armored personnel carrier configuration that features seating for three crew members and 9 infantry soldiers.

It is equipped with the new Oerlikon Fieldranger 20 remote-controlled gun from Rheinmetall Air Defence, General Dynamics said in a statement.

The medium-caliber weapon station provides accurate fire up to 2,000 meters and is compatible with an array of ammunition types, General Dynamics said.

The vehicle was recently selected by the Swiss army and will feature a platform that includes the RUAG Cobra 120mm mortar system for the service's mortar carrier program, the company said.

The Piranha 3+ was developed in response to customer requirements for increased levels of protection, off-road mobility and potential for future growth, General Dynamics said.

The company will also present the new version of its Duro 4X4 vehicle.

It is now equipped with state-of-the-art automotive technology and is highly mobile with compact dimensions and a flexible loading space that suits a range of military applications.

The Duro 4X4 allows for flexibility in transporting troops and cargo without a need to reconfigure the vehicle.

It was initially designed and made for the Swiss army to replace the smaller 3 model.

Dutch military taps Thales, Unica for security systems
Paris (UPI) Jun 13, 2016 - Thales and Dutch technical services company Unica have been contracted to set up a new surveillance and security system in the Netherlands.

The contract from the Commando Diensten Centrum of the Ministry of Defense is for installation of the system at about 170 locations.

"We are proud of this new contract with the Dutch government and are happy to respond to this challenge with Unica," said Patrice Caine, chairman and chief executive officer of Thales. "Our priority is to meet the most demanding requirements of each customer."

The security and surveillance system will integrate access control, intruder detection and nationwide monitoring and control.

Thales and Unica, equal partners in the contract, will develop, integrate, install, manage and service the necessary hardware and software for security monitoring and will work together with the Ministry of Defence to manage the services over a 15-year period.

Additional details of the award were not disclosed.
