Germany to shut northern airports because of ash: officials

by Staff Writers
Berlin (AFP) May 24, 2011
German air safety experts announced they would shut down airports in the north of the country from 5:00 am (0300 GMT) on Wednesday because of ash coming from an Icelandic volcano.

No flights will be allowed to take off or land at Bremen from 5:00 am or Hamburg from 6:00 am, German Air Safety (DFS) said in a statement late Tuesday.

The statement did not mention Hanover, which is also in the north.

However it said Berlin's airports "may also be affected... through the course of the morning."
