An unidentified country in central Asia has ordered an integrated tactical communications system from the Harris Corporation.

The contract carries a value of $78 million but the company did not disclose a delivery schedule for its equipment.

"The Harris ITACS enables this nation to make a rapid transition to modern, flexible and modular IP-based tactical communications," said Brendan O'Connell, president, International business, Harris RF Communications. "This system dramatically improves situational awareness by creating a mobile tactical Internet that delivers voice, data and video across the battlefield."

Harris said the system builds upon the communications capabilities it previously delivered to the country and provides a range of advanced tactical communication services, including Voice over Internet Protocol, teleconferencing, messaging and email, and common operational picture applications.

A private tactical cellular service will be provided using Harris Fusion 4G LTE base stations and subscriber terminals. The expanded ITACS also includes the RF-7800W high-capacity line-of-sight radio and the RF-7800M multiband networking radio for soldier- and vehicle-based mobile ad hoc wideband networking.
