India is planning to launch a record 22 satellites by a single rocket in May this year from the southern spaceport of Sriharikota, a top space official said.

The state-owned Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will send the 22 satellites, including India's Cartosat 2C and a number of micro and nano satellites from the United States, Canada, Indonesia and Germany, to space on board its home-made Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C34.

"We are planning to launch as many as 22 satellites on board PSLV C34. We had earlier sent 10 satellites on a single mission. Now, we are planning more than double.

"We hope that the launch will be in May," ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre Director K Sivan told the media in southern India on Monday.

However, India will not be able to break the U.S. space agency NASA's record that had sent some 29 satellites at one go three years ago.
