Italian shipyard delivers new Torado submarine
by Stephen Carlson
Washington (UPI) May 12, 2017

The attack submarine Romeo Romel, the fourth being build for the Naval Armament Unit of the Italian navy, was delivered at Italian defense contractor Fincantieri's shipyard at Muggiano, the company announced on Thursday.

The vessel is the last of four submarines being built in the U212A Todaro-class.

The previous ship, Pietro Venuti, a twin of the Romeo Romel, was delivered in July 2016. The Muggiano shipyard has been manufacturing submarines since 1907, with the Romeo Romel the 107th built there.

The Todaro-class submarine is a highly advanced attack submarine built with amagnetic material, making it difficult to be be detected by magnetic sensors used by aircraft and ships. It also features some of the most advanced silencing technology to help it avoid sonar detection.

The Todaro-class displaces over 1,500 tons of water, has a 27 member crew and has six 533 millimeter torpedo tubes for A184 Mod 3 heavy torpedoes.

The vessel also features the advanced combat management system MSI-90U designed by Kongsberg, along with an advanced sonar suite capable of a variety of frequencies. It has a diesel-electric power plant utilizing fuel cell technology, which helps maintain silence.

The project was conducted in cooperation with the German Submarine Consortium.
