Japanese Energy Supply Gets FiT With Solar Bonds
by Staff Writers
Tokyo, Japan (SPX) Jul 05, 2012

To date, 1 million homes have gone solar, leaving 9 million homes in 8 years. Last year about 265,000 systems were installed.

ABC Solar Japan has plans to sell the long-term revenue from Japanese solar installations as Asset Backed Securities to institutional and individual investors.

"Today is a great day for the people of Japan as we seek investors to help the rapid adoption of localized solar power generation," said ABC Solar Japan president Tetsuro Nishida.

Through the collaboration of experienced financial and accounting experts in Tokyo's Marunouchi financial district, ABC Solar Japan's asset model establishes the ability to sell the 20 year Japanese Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) revenue as safe and secure bonds backed by hard assets - the solar panel systems installed across the rooftops of Japan.

The Japanese Feed-in-Tariff program pays a premium of 42 Yen (53 cents) per kWh produced over 20 years.

Solar production in Japan ranges from 70 to 80% of the same production of a California based solar system. A 10KW DC solar system will make 10,770 kWh a year in Tokyo for a system with a south tilt. This translates to 452,319 Yen ($5,654) a year and 8,629,303 Yen ($107,866) over 20 years, including solar panel degradation factors.

Depending on the roof, panel type and location, ABC Solar is installing in Japan at 380 Yen per watt. This translates to 3,990,000 Yen for the installed 10KW DC system. After the 100% green depreciation, the out-of-pocket cost is estimated at 2,425,200 Yen for 452,319 Yen in yearly solar FiT revenue potential - representing an 18% yield.

The figures are based on solar panels from Hyundai of South Korea. The new Feed-in-Tariff allows foreign-made panels, provided they have a TUV or UL registration. This is because the Japanese government has stated that they want 10 million solar Japanese homes by 2020.

To date, 1 million homes have gone solar, leaving 9 million homes in 8 years. Last year about 265,000 systems were installed.

ABC Solar Japan is owned and operated by California-based ABC Solar, Inc.

ABC Solar's core business is the development of a distributed sales affiliate channel to utilize the ABC Solar proprietary Solar Business Operating System (SBOS), available to Japanese businesses at www.Japan.co.jp.

The SBOS provides a complete solar business management system including system design, permitting and rebate registrations using software automation tools.
