The U.S. Coast Guard has contracted L-3 Communications to upgrade C-130J aircraft using government-owned mission system suites.

Under the contract, the mission systems jointly developed by the Coast Guard and U.S. Navy will be installed on two baseline C-30J long-range surveillance aircraft. Its multiple options include installation of the suites on three other C-130Js and conversion seven HC-130J aircraft.

The contract has a five-year period of performance and a value of about $93 million if all options are exercised.

"We are excited to extend our C-130 missionization experience to the U.S. Coast Guard fleet," said Mark Von Schwarz, president of L-3's Aerospace Systems business segment. "Our team's experience with the C-130 platform and this mission system will be important in delivering these aircraft that will improve the long-range surveillance capabilities for the U.S. Coast Guard."

L-3 currently provides the U.S. Coast Guard with communications systems design and production work, C4ISR integration equipment and services, and information assurance expertise to several platforms, including the Offshore Patrol Cutter, Fast Response Cutter and National Security Cutters. It also provides information assurance and integrated communications products and sustainment work for Coast Guard command centers and legacy cutter upgrades.

L-3 said work under the new contract will be performed by L-3 Platform Integration in Waco, Texas.
