Lockheed Martin has completed production of the first modernized Tactical Missile System and delivered it to the U.S. Army.

The Tactical Missile System, also known as TACMS, is part of the Army's Service Life Extension Program. The new weapon has been refitted with updated warheads designed to hit their targets without leaving behind unexploded ordnance. They also include updated guidance electronics to assist warfighters with targeting the enemy more closely.

TACMS is the only long-range tactical surface-to-surface missile ever used by the U.S. Armed Forces in combat. They can be fired from any MLRS launcher, including Lockheed Martin's own High-Mobility Artillery Rocket System.

"These new modifications enhance TACMS' capability and significantly extend its useful life," Lockheed Martin's Tactical Missiles vice president Ken Musculus said in a press release. "These upgrades ensure TACMS is ready to meet our customers' needs now and into the future."

The missiles were manufactured at Lockheed Martin's facility in Camden, Ark. They are scheduled for flight testing later this year at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
