Motorola Mobility buys cloud storage firm Zecter

by Staff Writers
New York (AFP) Dec 22, 2010
Motorola Mobility said Wednesday that it has acquired Zecter, a startup that provides storage and streaming of digital media over the Internet.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Zecter products allow on-demand access from smartphones, tablet computers and personal computers to music, video, photos and documents stored in the Internet "cloud."

Zecter currently offers two products: ZumoDrive, for cloud-based content synchronization and sharing, and ZumoCast, for personal media streaming to any device.

Motorola Mobility, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Motorola, said Zecter will "provide consumers with real-time access to their content."

"Consumers want seamless access to their content and media from wherever they are, while content providers want to ensure that content remains protected and secure," Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president of software and services for Motorola Mobility, said in a statement.

"We believe that Zecter enables that seamless experience with the necessary security measures, and we are delighted to be able to work with this team," Wyatt said.

Motorola Mobility, the company's mobile phone division, is to be spun off from the rest of the company on January 4.
