OSCE urges members to carry out nuclear stress tests

Vienna (AFP) April 13, 2011
OSCE chair Lithuania urged the security body's 56 member states Wednesday to conduct stress tests on their nuclear plants, in the wake of Japan's nuclear disaster.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite "called on all OSCE participating states to be more open to co-operation on nuclear power safety issues and to perform stress tests on nuclear power plants," the Organisation for Security and Co-operation said in a statement.

In a speech before the body's permanent council on Wednesday, Grybauskaite also emphasised the resolution of frozen conflicts in places like Transdniestr, the fight against drug trafficking and gender equality among her country's priorities during its one-year chairmanship.

Aside from her visit to the OSCE, the Lithuanian president also met with Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann, who backed her call for nuclear stress tests.

Austria was the first country in the European Union to call for stringent tests on the continent's nuclear plants, after Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant was hit by an earthquake and tsunami last month, prompting fears of a meltdown.

The OSCE's 56 members span half the globe from Russia and central Asia to Europe and Canada.
