One dead, 7 wounded in Israeli strikes on Gaza

Gaza City, Palestinian Territories (AFP) Aug 16, 2011

One Palestinian was killed and seven wounded in at least four overnight Israeli air strikes across the Gaza Strip, Palestinian medics said on Tuesday.

The Israeli military said its aircraft had targeted four areas in the Gaza Strip in response to the firing of a Grad rocket from the Palestinian territory into southern Israel.

Adham Abu Selmiya, spokesman for the Hamas-run emergency services in the Gaza Strip, said the strikes had killed one Palestinian and wounded seven.

"We learned of the martyrdom of the youth Musa Shtawe, 29, who died of his injuries after a strike east of Gaza City," he said.

"The outcome of the Israeli aggression during the past 24 hours is now one martyr and seven injured."

The Israeli military did not specify which sites it had targeted, but Palestinian sources said they counted five air strikes across Gaza.

Three of the raids hit targets east of Gaza City, including the Zeitun neighbourhood, they said.

Further south, two more raids were carried out east of Khan Yunis and on a tunnel under the border with Egypt near Rafah, they said.

"The raid in Rafah left three people injured, including a child," Abu Selmiya said.

In a statement, Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said Shtawe was a member of the group.

"He was martyred after a journey of jihad... and hard jihadi work," the group said.

The Israeli military said it carried out the strikes "in response to the firing of a rocket from the Gaza Strip at the city of Beersheva.

"In a separate incident, IDF soldiers identified a squad of terrorists planning to fire rockets at Israel. IAF (Israel Air Force) aircraft thwarted the attempt, confirming a hit," it said.

The rocket that hit near Beersheva did not cause any damage or injuries, the military said. Israeli public radio said a second rocket had been fired at Beersheva, but it was not immediately clear where it landed.

Since last month there has been an increase in the number of rockets fired from Gaza, which are usually followed by retaliatory air raids.

The incidents have interrupted several months of calm following a flare-up in April, when an anti-tank missile hit an Israeli school bus, killing a teenager.

Israel responded to that attack with a series of air strikes that killed at least 19 Palestinians in the deadliest violence since Israel's devastating 22-day assault on Gaza over New Year 2009.

Israel 'trying to nix bill halting US aid to army units'
Jerusalem (AFP) Aug 16, 2011 - Israel is trying to dissuade a US senator from pushing a bill that would suspend US assistance to three of its elite army units suspected of human rights abuses, Israeli daily Haaretz reported on Tuesday.

The bill is being promoted by US Senator Patrick Leahy, who wants to see funding withheld from the three units, one of which was involved in the deadly raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla in 2010, which left nine Turkish nationals dead.

Quoting a senior Israeli source, the paper said that both Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak and the Israeli embassy in Washington had been trying to convince Leahy, a senior Democrat, against promoting the legislation, which would put restrictions on military assistance to Israel.

The bill mentions the navy's Shayetet 13, the unit which was involved in last year's flotilla raid, the undercover Duvdevan unit and the air force's Shaldag unit, alleging that all three have been involved in human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Israeli source said the bill proposes that military aid to Israel be subjected to the same restrictions that apply to countries like Egypt, Pakistan and Jordan.

During a visit to Washington at the end of July, Barak met Leahy, whom he has known for years, and tried to talk him out of promoting the bill, after the Israeli embassy there had unsuccessfully done the same, Haaretz said.

Since 2007, US military aid to Israel has amounted to almost $3 billion (2.1 billion euros) per year, which is entirely devoted to the purchase of American weapons as part of a 10-year agreement.
