Philippine volcano erupts, showering ash on town

by Staff Writers
Manila (AFP) Feb 21, 2011
A Philippine volcano erupted on Monday showering an entire town with ash, although there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, officials said.

A large ash explosion from Bulusan, a 1,559-metre (5,115-foot) volcano, drifted south to cover Irosin, a town of 46,000 people, said Harriet Sayson, of the civil defence operations centre in nearby Legaspi city.

"There's zero visibility at Irosin at the moment, and we can't get in touch with officials there," Sayson told AFP by telephone.

She said civil defence staff were in the town checking for damage or casualties, but none had been reported so far. No evacuations had been ordered, she added.

State volcanologist Ramil Vaquilar told AFP rumbling sounds accompanied an ash column that rose between two and 2.5 kilometres (1.2-1.6 miles) above the crater.

"An eruption occurred at 9:12 (0112 GMT)," he said, adding no further major activity had been observed since.

Bulusan is among 23 active volcanoes in the Philippines, which is located in the so-called Ring of Fire of volcanic activity around the Pacific.

Bulusan last erupted between March and June of 2006.

Ancient Undersea Volcanoes Yield Clues To Earth Dynamics
Auckland, New Zealand (SPX) Feb 21, 2011
Over 800 meters (nearly half a mile) of rock pulled from below the seafloor near the coast of New Zealand may yield new clues to understanding how some hotspot volcanoes are created and whether and how the sources of these volcanoes have moved over time deep within the Earth. An international team of scientists has just returned from an expedition in the Pacific Ocean, where they collected ... read more
