RWE to help build 37MW British solar farm

London expects 'new stage' in green energy
London (UPI) Apr 23, 2013 - The British government said Wednesday it selected eight projects that combined will make up more than 10 percent of the renewable energy mix by 2020.

"These contracts for major renewable electricity projects mark a new stage in Britain's green energy investment boom," British Energy and Climate Change Secretary Edward Davey said in a statement. "By themselves they will bring green jobs and growth across the United Kingdom, but they are a significant part of our efforts to give Britain cleaner and more secure energy."

The contracts, ranging from wind energy projects to biomass plants, were awarded under the government's Contracts for Difference program, which guarantees the companies a set price for renewable energy supplies. The government said it may cost more than $1.5 billion per year in subsidies, but would generate up to $20 million in private sector investments by 2020.

Once they're all built, the government said the eight projects combined will generate about 14 percent of all the renewable electricity expected on the grid by 2020.

German energy company RWE said Wednesday it would help build a 37-megawatt solar project to be constructed on an abandoned British airfield.

RWE said, once constructed, the Kencot Hill solar facility will be the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom, generating enough energy to meet the annual demands of 10,000 households.

The project should come online in late 2014. At full capacity, it will be able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 16,000 tons per year.

The German utility company said that, once the project is completed, it will sell Kencot Hill to Foresight Solar Fund Ltd., a British-based infrastructure asset manager, for an undisclosed sum.

Stefan Judisch, the chief executive of the RWE division involved in the program, said the finance deal for Foresight was "innovative" for what he said was the first such program for the German company in the British solar power market.

"RWE aims in future to repeat this structure, attracting additional investors and thus helping the UK and other European governments to deliver their CO2 reduction and renewables targets," he said in a statement.

Members of the European Union aim to cut emissions by 20 percent of their 1990s benchmark and rely on renewable energy for 20 percent of their energy needs by 2020.

Nanoparticles Create Skinny Solar Cells
Berlin, Germany (SPX) Apr 23, 2014
Nanostructures could enable more light to be directed into the active layer of solar cells, increasing their efficiency. Martina Schmid at Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB), has now measured how irregularly distributed silver particles influence the absorption of light. She demonstrated that nanoparticles interact with one another via their electromagnetic near-fields, so that local "hot spot ... read more
