ESI Motion has announced SatBat, a new battery engineered for spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit. SatBat integrates a Heater and Battery Management System, aiming to improve power storage and management in orbital environments.

The battery uses ESI Motion's expertise in radiation-tolerant electronics and energy management. It delivers high power density, thermal stability, and advanced battery control, setting standards in space power systems.

SatBat weighs half as much as typical space Lithium-Ion batteries and offers twice the useable capacity and operational life. It retains 98 percent of its original charge after a four-year LEO mission.

"SatBat represents a major leap in spacecraft energy technology," said Earnie Beem, President and CTO at ESI Motion. "As satellite constellations in Low Earth Orbit continue to grow, SatBat provides the reliability, performance, and scalability required to power the next generation of commercial and government missions."

Key technical features include high energy density, comprehensive diagnostics, autonomous protection, health monitoring, radiation tolerance, and a scalable, modular design. SatBat adapts to CubeSats, smallsats, and large satellite platforms.

SatBat's heater enables charge and discharge at minus 30 degrees Celsius without damage. Optional features include telemetry, integrated DC-DC conversion, and internal charging. The battery's efficiency reduces payload mass and launch costs, optimizing available power for missions.

SatBat is intended to improve power efficiency, lower launch mass, and extend mission lifetimes for operators in the growing LEO satellite sector.

Recharge reactor extracts lithium from EV battery waste for direct reuse
Los Angeles CA (SPX) Nov 11, 2025
Engineers at Rice University have developed a process that recovers lithium from electric vehicle battery waste using electricity and water, skipping the need for strong acids and complex chemical steps. The method applies the same reaction as conventional battery charging, driving lithium ions from spent cathodes into water where they combine with hydroxide to form high-purity lithium hydroxide. Sibani Lisa Biswal explained, "If charging a battery pulls lithium out of a cathode, why not use that ... read more
