Russia plans to open a helicopter center and aircraft assembly plant in Azerbaijan's capital, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin was quoted by Russian news agency Tass as saying.

"There are many planes and helicopters of the Soviet and Russian make in Azerbaijan," Rogozin was quoted as saying. "So, they will be modernized and serviced in Azerbaijan."

The country is interested in buying Russian MC-21 planes and Russia is seeking to sign a contract with Baku for 10 of the aircraft early next year.

Azerbaijan is also interested in purchasing An-124 aircraft, Rogozin said.

The news came as trilateral talks took place this week in Baku between Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the Russia-Azerbaijan relationship has "become a strategic partnership not just on paper but in reality."

"It is very good to see that are ties are greatly diversified now, developing in different areas," Putin said in a Kremlin transcript of the meeting.

Both countries are interested in Russia as an exporter of high-quality weapons, Rogozin was quoted by Tass as saying.
