Finmeccanca supplying radar system for Indonesian jets
Rome (UPI) Feb 17, 2016 - Finmeccanica's Airborne and Space Systems Division is to supply its SEER radar warning system for Indonesian Air Force multi-role fighters.

The contract for SEER was issued by Singapore-based Aptronics PTE Ltd., the prime contractor for upgrading Indonesia's Mk 209 Hawk light multi-role fighters.

Finmeccanica did not disclose the value of the contract or other details but said the award covers an initial batch of aircraft for current operations, with an option to provide additional systems.

SEER is a self-protection system which detects and identifies potential radar threats and alerts the pilot. A British variant, the SG200-D radar warning receiver, is used on the Royal Air Force's Puma and Chinook helicopters.

Finmeccanica supports the SEER system with a range of operational support services.

Saab has introduced an early warning airborne surveillance system called GlobalEye.

GlobalEye combines Saab's new Erieye extended range radar and mission control system with a Global 6000 jet from Bombardier for a high-performance system that can conduct simultaneous long-range detection, tracking and surveillance in the air, land and maritime domains from a single platform.

"With GlobalEye we expand and sharpen our offering, targeting customers looking to maximise their return on investment in extended AEW&C capabilities as a national asset to benefit their country," said Micael Johansson, head of Saab's area Electronic Defense Systems business.

Saab said GlobalEye automatically detects and tracks air and surface targets at significantly increased ranges compared to existing airborne radars.

"GlobalEye is a game changer that delivers a unique swing-role capability for simultaneous air, maritime and ground surveillance in a single solution, with the ability to change role dynamically, while airborne during any mission," Johansson said.

Bombardier's Global 6000 ultra-long-range jet offers the latest avionics and combines ideal size for multi-role and extended AEW&C with outstanding performance. It is a high speed aircraft with impressive short field performance and low operating costs, Saab said.

The launch customer for GlobalEye is the United Arab Emirates.
