Seven dead in Philippine floods, landslides: rescuers

by Staff Writers
Manila (AFP) Nov 5, 2010
Floods and landslides killed seven people and left two others missing after heavy rains in the northern Philippines, rescuers said Friday.

Scattered flooding over the past three days forced more than 3,000 people from their homes in the northeastern part of the main island of Luzon, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a report.

Landslides killed six people in the upland towns of San Mariano and Bulanao, while one person drowned in the town of Benito Soliven, the government agency said.

Two other people were missing after a landslide hit a community in the town of Penablanca.

The government said landslides and floods also blocked roads and destroyed 16 bridges, though the waters have since receded. However, 3,533 people remain in government-run evacuation centres.

A cold front caused the heavy rains in the region, the state weather service said.
