Six NATO troops die in shooting by Afghan pilot

by Staff Writers
Kabul (AFP) April 27, 2011
Six foreign troops died Wednesday in a shooting by an Afghan pilot in Kabul, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.

"Six International Security Assistance Force service members died following a shooting incident here today," an ISAF statement said, without identifying the nationalities of those killed in line with policy.

An ISAF spokesman confirmed that the deaths followed the shooting at a NATO training centre for the Afghan air force in Kabul, which officials said was carried out by an Afghan pilot, apparently following an argument.

It is thought to be the highest number of foreign forces killed in a single incident since December last year, when six NATO soldiers died in a rebel attack in the south.

The month before, six US troops were shot dead during a training session in eastern Afghanistan, apparently by a member of the Afghan Border Police.

Afghan force numbers are rapidly increasing as international forces train them up to take more responsibility for security ahead of 2014.

There are currently around 160,000 Afghan troops and 126,000 Afghan police in the country.
