Soldiers kill two policemen in Nigeria: police

Soldiers allegedly retaliating for the murder of a colleague ambushed and killed two senior Nigerian police officers on Tuesday, police said.

The police officers had carried out "a peace mission" to the commanding officer of the army battalion "as a result of the alleged unfortunate killing of a soldier by policemen" on Wednesday, a police statement said.

"The two (police) officers were ambushed and killed when leaving the barracks," it added.

The police chief has ordered an investigation into the incident, promising that those involved would be prosecuted.

The army authorities has not reacted to the police statement.
