French engineering company Technip said it was awarded a construction contract by Shell to work in the Gannet field off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Technip received the contract from Shell to install new pipelines at the Gannet Alpha platform about 110 miles off the eastern coast of Scotland.

Bill Morrice, managing director of Technip's regional division, said the deal would strengthen the company's relationship with Shell.

"We look forward to supporting Shell to maximize production from the Gannet field," he said in a statement.

Oil leaked from the Gannet platform in the North Sea in August 2011. The release totaled around 1,300 barrels of oil, making it the largest oil spill in the region in more than a decade.

No oil from the Gannet spill reached shore and much of the original sheen dispersed naturally. The British government had said the main leak was stopped within nine days after it was reported. Shell last year removed residual oil from the platform.

Technip didn't provide a monetary value for the contract nor did it say if its work was related to the 2011 incident.
