Tecta America's Blackmore and Buckner branch, located in Indianapolis, and F. J. A. Christiansen, located in Milwaukee, recently completed a 282,000 square-foot re-roofing of the Major General Emmett J. Bean Federal Center in Lawrence, Ind. The re-roofing marked the first phase of a $35 million solar-panel installation at the building, the largest in Indiana's history.

The U.S. General Services Administration is using Recovery Act funds for the project, named as one of "100 Recovery Act Projects that are Changing America" by Vice President Joe Biden.

"The federal government awarded Tecta America with this project because it was confident in our approach and impressed by Tecta's ability to pool resources as the nation's largest commercial roofer," said Steve Buckner, president of Blackmore and Buckner, a Tecta America Company.

"We are proud to include our contributions to this historic project to our industry-leading portfolio."

Working together, Blackmore and Buckner and F.J.A. Christiansen removed three roofs containing between 10 and 24 inches of lightweight concrete with a removed weight of more than 4,300 tons. The tear off was conducted at night using a roof saw and diamond blades to cut the lightweight concrete and jackhammers and skid steers to remove it.

More than 1,500 tons of the roofing material - nearly 50% of the reusable material - was recycled in the installation of the new roof.

"With every new project, our goal is to recycle as much of the original roofing material as possible," said Buckner.

"This is just one of Tecta's practices that have contributed to our reputation as an environmentally-conscious company."

The remaining phases of the solar installation project are expected to be completed by December 2013.
