Terahertz spectroscopy offers real-time insight into perovskite aging

Hybrid perovskites are promising materials for advanced electronic devices such as solar cells and LEDs. However, their limited lifespan poses a significant challenge for commercial deployment. As these materials age, their performance deteriorates, creating obstacles for both researchers and manufacturers. Addressing this issue requires not only improving the stability of perovskites but also developing techniques to monitor their aging process in real-time, which is crucial for enhancing their durability and efficiency.

A recent study led by Prof. Yiwen Sun at Shenzhen University has introduced a novel approach to observing the aging process of perovskites using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. This method relies on the resonant absorption of terahertz waves by phonons within the perovskite structure. During aging, the intensity of phonon vibration modes linked to the Pb-I bonds diminishes, which in turn affects the absorption peaks of terahertz waves at specific frequencies. The research team proposed that these changes in terahertz absorption peaks can serve as a real-time indicator of the perovskites' aging status.

These findings are significant as they provide a practical method for tracking the aging process of perovskites in real-time. This advancement has the potential to accelerate the commercialization of perovskite-based devices, improving their reliability and efficiency for widespread use.

The study, titled "Real-time detection of ageing status of methylammonium lead iodide perovskite thin films by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy," was published in 'Frontiers of Optoelectronics' on July 29, 2024.

Energy-hungry Singapore eyes deserts, forest for renewables
Singapore (AFP) Aug 23, 2024
With huge data centres set to drive up already outsized energy demand, the tiny city-state of Singapore is looking to Australia's deserts and Malaysia's rainforests for clean power. This week Australia announced a massive solar farm that it hopes will eventually offer two gigawatts (GW) of power to Singapore via undersea cable. Singapore aims to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, but it relies heavily on imported oil and gas. The city lacks the conditions to produce ei ... read more
