Two Iraqi security officers were killed in a clash with militants in western Iraq, officials said on Monday.

Iraq's national security service said one of its teams "stormed a terrorist hideout and eliminated its occupants" in Anbar province, which borders Syria.

Two officers were killed "following the armed confrontation with wanted suspects", the service said in a statement.

Iraq declared victory over fighters from the Islamic State (IS) group at the end of 2017 after a three-year battle in which the jihadists had seized large swathes of the country.

But jihadist cells still launch sporadic attacks against the army and police, often in rural areas.
