Washington DC (UPI) Dec 05, 2018

Huntington Ingalls has been awarded $10.8 million for material purchases and management for the USS Chosin and USS Vicksburg Ticonderoga-class cruisers.

The contract, announced Tuesday by the Department of Defense, primarily goes toward technical support, engineering and logistics.

Work on the contract is expected to run through August 2019, and falls under Navy 2018 procurement funding.

The Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser is one of the primary surface combatants of the U.S. Navy.

It carries the Aegis Weapons System, an advanced combat control suite that can coordinate surface-to-air missiles, Tomahawk cruise missiles and anti-submarine sensors and weapons.

It carries the MK-41 Vertical Launch System for missiles, torpedoes, light guns, two SH-60 Seahawk helicopters and a crew of over 300. Alongside the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, the vessels provide air-defense, fire support and escort services.
