US Senators urge military radar on Canada border

by Staff Writers
Washington (AFP) Feb 10, 2011
Six US senators from states that border Canada called Thursday for the deployment of military radars against low-flying aircraft used to smuggle illegal drugs into the United States.

The lawmakers said in a letter to US Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano that the move was needed to help counter "the increased rate of drug smuggling across our northern border."

"Given what is at stake in combating illegal cross-border activity, and given its past success, I write to ask your agencies to coordinate in determining whether there is any unused radar technology that can be deployed along our northern border to combat drug smuggling," they wrote.

The group, all Democrats, included Senators Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Jon Tester of Montana, and Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York.

A fundamental reform is required, rather than a quick fix, since whatever the eurozone countries decide to do about bailing out the ... read more
