U.S. to fund cutting-edge renewable energy programs
by Daniel J. Graeber

U.K. funds bioenergy program in wetlands
London (UPI) Apr 18, 2013 - Plant material from wetlands could be turned into a form of energy that could add to the growing British renewable energy mix, Minister Greg Barker said.

Three companies -- AMW IBERS, Natural Synergies and AB Systems -- will share the reward to develop technology to turn reeds and other plant material from wetlands into energy.

"The ability to turn plant material, that would otherwise have been burned or left to decompose, into a sustainable energy source is an important part of the move towards a low carbon economy," Energy and Climate Change Minister Barker said in a statement Thursday.

Barker said sources of bioenergy have the potential to account for as much as 11 percent of the British energy mix by 2020.

The plants are already grown for conservation purposes, he said, and new land won't be used nor will the plants used for bioenergy compete with land used for food crops.

The awards are the third in a tranche for biomass that began in October 2012 and runs through March 2015. The three companies awarded the funds will test their programs at three separate wetland sites.

As much as $4 billion in loan guarantees may be available for cutting-edge renewable energy technologies, the U.S. Department of Energy said.

The Energy Department issued a draft loan guarantee for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects that would avoid, reduce or sequester greenhouse gases found to be linked to climate change.

U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said existing loan guarantee projects helped fund programs that are now commonplace in the U.S. renewable energy portfolio.

"We want to replicate that success by focusing on technologies that are on the edge of commercial-scale deployment today," he said in a statement Wednesday.

The Energy Department said it was tooling the loans toward advanced grid integration, drop-in biofuels, waste-to-energy programs and those that would enhance existing renewable energy facilities.

The draft loan guarantee is part of President Obama's so-called all-of-the-above energy strategy. The loan program came under criticism from Obama's opponents following the 2011 bankruptcy of solar panel company Solyndra, which received $536 million from the federal government before the company collapsed.

Genetically modified tobacco plants as an alternative for producing bioethanol
Navarre, Spain (SPX) Apr 17, 2014
Researchers at the NUP/UPNA-Public University of Navarre and the IdAB-Institute of Agrobiotechnology have conducted a study into genetically modified tobacco plants from which it is possible to produce between 20 and 40 per cent more ethanol; this would increase their viability as a raw material for producing biofuels. Tobacco, a high-density crop which is mown several times throughout its ... read more
