White House confident Senate to pass START treaty

by Staff Writers
Washington (AFP) Dec 20, 2010
The White House said Monday it was confident that the US Senate would ratify a new nuclear pact with Russia, within days, despite Republican attempts to kill or delay the deal.

"The White House believes that before Congress leaves town the Senate will ratify the new START treaty," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

"The President and the Vice President continue to communicate with senators in order to ensure they have the most updated information," Gibbs said.

He spoke as the Senate forged on with a marathon debate on the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) agreed with Russia this year, which makes large cuts in nuclear arsenals and allows for resumed weapons inspections.

Administration officials have mounted an intense advocacy campaign to persuade a number of Republicans to join Obama's Democrats in ratifying the deal, which needs 67 votes in the chamber.
