Facebook plans mobile ads based on app use: report
New York (AFP) July 7, 2012 - Social networking giant Facebook plans to engage in a new type of mobile advertising based on the apps used by consumers, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday on its website.

The social network, which has 900 million users, would use its Facebook Connect feature -- which lets millions log into applications using their Facebook ID and password -- to track consumers' apps, and tailor ads accordingly, it said.

Facebook -- which is based in Menlo Park, California -- may also attempt to track how people use the apps, but a final decision has not been made, the newspaper said, quoting unnamed sources familiar with the company's plans.

The plan is likely to stoke privacy fears, as the initiative would go further than current mobile-ad networks, which track ads viewed by consumers on their mobile phone's web browser, the report said.

One of the biggest challenges Facebook must confront is its difficulties in generating revenues from smartphones, with more and more users accessing the social networks from mobile devices.

That factor led analysts to downgrade their forecasts for the group before its stock market debut in May, which ended up being less than a success.

At that time, Facebook shares were offered at $38. Shares closed Friday at $31.73.

Facebook and Yahoo! announced Friday a new advertising partnership as the two tech giants settled a court dispute over patents.

The deal includes "a patent portfolio cross-license" and will allow the two firms to "work together to bring consumers and advertisers premium media experiences promoted and distributed across both Yahoo! and Facebook," a statement by the companies said.

The deal comes after Yahoo! filed suit against Facebook in March, accusing the social networking giant of infringing on 10 patents.

Facebook responded by accusing Yahoo! of infringing on its patented technology in a broad array of products including online venues for news, games, cars, travel and photo-sharing service Flickr.

The fight between Yahoo! and Facebook heated up in April with the floundering Internet pioneer accusing the social network star of buying patents just to retaliate in court.

But in the peace accord, Yahoo! and Facebook said they would "work together to bring Yahoo!'slarge media event coverage to Facebook users by collaborating on social integrations on the Yahoo! site."

"We are excited to develop a deeper partnership with Facebook," said Ross Levinsohn, interim chief executive of Yahoo!.

"We are looking forward to building on the success we have already seen to provide innovative new products and experiencesfor both consumers and sponsors."

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, said the deal would "provide users with engaging social experiences while creating value for marketers."

The two firms already have a multiyear partnership allowing users to discover and connect news and information on Yahoo! sites and share them with their Facebook friends.

The new agreement deepens the ties between the struggling Internet pioneer and the fast-growing social network.

The statement said the firms "have agreed to work more closely and collaborate together on multiple tent-pole and anchor events annually over the next several years to provideunparalleled experiences for consumers and world-classsponsorship opportunities for advertisers."

Patent suits are a frequent occurrence among smartphone and tablet computer makers, and the world's best known brands are ensnared in a complex web of legal claims, but such suits are relatively rare among social media companies.

Yahoo! is undergoing yet another rebooting following the ousting of its chief executive after less than a year over a resume scandal.

Levinsohn took over as interim CEO as a search for a new chief was launched.

Various reports said Levinsohn was among the candidates being considered to the top job.

Another candidate believed to be under consideration, Jason Kilar of the television group Hulu, said in a statement he "has graciously declined to be considered."

Yahoo!'s share of overall US online ad revenue dropped from 15.7 percent in 2009 to just 9.5 percent last year, according to industry tracker eMarketer.

While the online advertising market is expected to grow 23.3 percent to $39.5 billion this year, Yahoo!'s share of revenues will fall further to 7.4 percent, eMarketer says.

Facebook meanwhile is seeking to reassure its investors after a flopped public offering that it can boost its advertising revenues.

Twitter beefs up search function
San Francisco (AFP) July 6, 2012 - Twitter said Friday it was upgrading its search functions to include "autocomplete" and spelling correction features.

The new Twitter search will also anticipate when users are looking for posts by people they follow, and offer related suggestions.

The move by the popular social media group is similar to search functions offered by Google and other engines.

"We're constantly working to make Twitter search the simplest way to discover what's happening in real time," said Twitter engineer Frost Li in a blog post.

"To that end, today we're introducing search autocomplete and 'People you follow' search results to twitter.com. In addition to recent improvements like related query suggestions, spelling corrections and more relevant search results, these updates make it even easier to immediately get closer to the things you care about."

The "search autocomplete" shows the most likely terms for a query. So a user who types "Jeremy" might get a suggestion for basketball star Jeremy Lin before finishing the full name.

Twitter will also allow users to see tweets about a given topic from only the people they follow if they select that option.

"Viewing tweets about a topic from just the people you follow is a great way to find useful information and join the conversation," Li said.

Twitter, which allows its members to post brief comments, links or pictures, claims to have more than 140 million active users, with the largest number being in the United States.

A recent survey found one in seven Americans who go online use Twitter and eight percent do so every day.
