Zuckerberg meets Russian PM on Moscow mission

Facebook tailoring ad services for businesses
New York (AFP) Oct 1, 2012 - Facebook's chief operating officer was in New York on Monday working to bolster investor confidence with assurances that the social network was intent on making money.

Sheryl Sandberg echoed co-founder Mark Zuckerberg's disappointment in the company's dismal stock market debut in May and said that revenue-generating schemes being considered included charging for upscale services.

"As we increase our investment in monetization, we're thinking about premium services for businesses," Sandberg said in an interview aired on CNBC.

"We've heard from businesses all over the world that they want more from us, there are things they'd pay for, they want us to provide, so it's an area we're starting to explore."

Facebook had no specific products to announce, but the opportunity is being pursued, she noted.

She also repeated Zuckerberg's assurance that Facebook sees opportunity in the trend by users to access the service from smartphones or tablets, where the company does not serve-up money making advertising.

With the California-based social network giant struggling to prove it can boost revenues, the company last month revamped its "Offers" service.

The change requires payments, starting at $5 per ad, for the deals offered through Facebook -- making companies pay for what had been free advertising until now.

Facebook last week added a feature that lets people send real-life cupcakes, coffee, stuffed animals or other gifts to friends in the social network.

The "Gifts" program is being rolled out gradually, starting in the United States, and Facebook stands to get a fee for brokering purchases.

The world's largest social network -- with more than 950 million members -- has seen its stock price sag since its market debut at $38 per share. Shares were $21.96 in after-market trades on Monday.


Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg on Monday met Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev as he visited Moscow on a mission to boost the social network's presence in the country and scout for new talent.

Russia is one of the few major countries worldwide where Facebook is not the number one social network and, with an estimated five million users, it lags well behind the homegrown Russian-language rival VKontakte.

Local media also quoted industry sources as saying Zuckerberg was keen to tempt the best Russian programmers away from Moscow to work on higher salaries in the United States, a prospect that would hardly delight the government.

Zuckerberg met Medvedev -- who promotes himself as a champion of innovation and a drive to give Russia a more diversified economy -- at the former president's Gorki residence outside Moscow.

In a nod to the seriousness of the occasion, Zuckerberg, 28, dropped his usual uniform of hooded top, jeans and trainers in favour of a dark suit and tie.

"As you know we do not just have gas and oil and gold and diamonds in Russia but we also have an IT industry," Medvedev told Zuckerberg in comments published by the government.

He noted the social revolution caused by the growth of social networks: "There can be no doubt that today we live in a completely different world. No-one has any doubt about this and this is probably partly your doing."

Medvedev spokeswoman Natalia Timakova said they also discussed cooperation in IT technology and start-ups in Skolkovo -- the new hub outside Moscow that has been championed by Medvedev as a counterpart for Silicon Valley.

Zuckerberg said the main reason for his visit was to attend the Facebook Hack in Moscow, an event where programmers compete to create the best new applications, and acknowledged he liked Russians' abilities.

"We have been really impressed by the quality, talent, innovation that we have seen not only from the engineers that we work with at Facebook but also developers," he said.

In parting, Zuckerberg gave Medvedev a symbolic if somewhat modest gift: a plain white T-shirt with the prime minister's Facebook page (Facebook.com/Dmitry.Medvedev) emblazoned across the front.

After changing into a T-shirt, Zuckerberg was then given the rare privilege of a 10-minute interview slot on prime time state television news to explain his strategy in Russia and the philosophy of Facebook.

"I am here primarily to talk to the entrepreneurs and engineers who are here building things and about innovation in general. I'm here to help and encourage people build stuff," he said.

Zuckerberg denied that he had come with the specific purpose of headhunting new staff and insisted he was more interested in helping homegrown start-ups that could then supply applications to Facebook.

"The point of why I am here is to talk to people and encourage people to build new companies here in Russia.

"That will help out Facebook but it will also help out the local technology community and I think it is good for everyone."

Representatives of VKontakte and Russia's largest Internet company Mail.ru confirmed to the Vedomosti business daily earlier that Facebook was trying to lure their employees with higher salaries.

According to a report by Renaissance Capital last year, Facebook is only the number four social networking site in Russia with five million users, compared with 21 million for VKontakte.

VKontakte, founded by Saint Petersburg native Pavel Durov, 27, is often described as the "Russian Zuckerberg" and aimed firmly at Russian speakers, allowing it to better respond to a very specific local market.

Although it is believed to be his first visit to Russia, Zuckerberg's company already has close links to the Russian Internet sector.

Russian technology investment firm DST Global, whose main shareholder is oligarch Alisher Usmanov, has a stake of at least five percent in Facebook, although some observers estimate that the holding is even higher.

The anti-Kremlin demonstrations that rocked Russia since December have largely been coordinated through social networks and analysts say that the increase in Internet use poses a significant challenge for the domination of President Vladimir Putin.

Facebook won't remove murder page: Australia police
Sydney (AFP) Oct 1, 2012 - Australian police on Monday said social media site Facebook had refused to take down a page containing offensive material about the man accused of murdering Irish woman Jill Meagher.

The search for Meagher, 29, who vanished while walking home from a Melbourne bar earlier this month, sparked a huge social media campaign, with more than 122,000 people "liking" a Facebook page dedicated to the case.

But several hate pages sprung up after Meagher's body was found in a shallow roadside grave 50 kilometres (31 miles) northwest of Melbourne and Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, was charged with her rape and murder.

Meagher's husband and the police have urged the public to refrain from commenting on Bayley or the highly publicised case, warning that any remarks made on social media sites had the potential to prejudice his trial.

Chief Victoria state police commissioner Ken Lay said Facebook had been approached about taking down one page in particular which contained offensive material about Bayley.

"Now, they've refused to do that," Lay told commercial radio.

"We've all got a social responsibility. Facebook is part of our community and I would have thought that it would have only been reasonable," he added.

"We've got to remember that no matter how horrible this crime is, this gentleman has got to be afforded a fair trial. It's not for Facebook pages or anyone else to be taking justice into their own hands."

Facebook later said it took its commitment to "rights and responsibilities very seriously and react(s) quickly to remove reported content that violates (its) policies."

"(We may) restrict access to content in a country where we are advised that it violates local law," the social media giant said in a statement to AFP, adding that it was in contact with law enforcement authorities in Victoria.

Lay said social media had been "enormously helpful" in the investigation of Meagher's disappearance, with thousands of people flooding the "Help us find Jill Meagher" Facebook site with information.

But he said there had also been drawbacks and some of the online "hatred" incited against Bayley was not helpful, with police seeking further advice on the issue.

Meagher's disappearance during the short walk home struck a nerve in Melbourne, where an estimated 30,000 people turned out for a peaceful anti-violence march on Sunday through the suburb where she was last seen alive.
